BI Experts’ Perspective: Mobile Apps
In the latest Business Intelligence Journal, from the Data Warehousing Institute, I provide an expert perspective to a hypothetical scenario. Torey Williams is the BI Director at a company that produces and sells maternity clothes. Management wants to “take it to the next level” and be able to access the information on cell phones and tablet devices. In addition, one manager has asked if Torey can monitor social media data such as Twitter and feed interesting information to his iPad. Six questions are asked about the scenario – about vendor strategies, technologies, priorities, security and social media. Myself and the other experts – Timothy Leonard, John O’ Brien and Lyndsay Wise – respond.
For example, to one question I responded:
“A BI Director today should be initiating conversation about mobile at their organizations. Torey should not be on the receiving end of a “requirement” for mobile or in any way surprised by it, regardless of her otherwise daily responsibilities. If so, lesson learned.
Torey cannot wait 6 months for mobile support from her current BI vendor. It is too long of a timeframe and the solution may be subpar – and easily could exceed the current vendor estimate for availability. Many BI vendor first ports to mobile simply take the long form and shrink it down for the small screen. This is totally inadequate.
It is perfectly reasonable to have different BI tools and vendors to address different needs in an organization. While it appears Torey is fortunate to have the same vendor for reporting and dashboards, this consistency may not extend into mobile deployment. A BI vendor today who provides reporting and dashboards, but is 6 months away from their mobile support is not full stack or positioned to address the majority of a client’s BI need over time. Perhaps, with mobile, some hedging of the vendor reliance strategy can be accomplished as well.”
